Turkey fryer oil & grease
Take used cooking oil to a staffed Metro recycling drop-off: Southwest Government Center (7219 Dixie Hwy.), Central Government Center (7201 Outer Loop) or East District Public Works (595 N. Hubbards Lane), open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For Thanksgiving they close at 1 p.m. the day before, are closed Thanksgiving Day and the day after, and close at 1 p.m. the Saturday after.
Extra trash
All garbage must fit inside the cart with the lid closed, up to 200 pounds. Set it out by 6 a.m. on collection day, but not before 4 p.m. the day before. For overflow recycling, Metro allows a store-bought 30 to 40 gallon container with handles and a lid, labeled "RECYCLING" (free stickers at 600 Meriwether Ave.).
Boxes & wrapping
Flattened cardboard is recyclable, so flatten boxes so the lid closes. Keep recyclables loose in the cart, not in plastic bags. Plastic bags, outer package wrapping and bubble wrap aren't accepted curbside; take them to a participating retail store drop-off. Styrofoam isn't accepted in curbside or drop-off recycling.
Tip
The Haz Bin household hazardous waste site at 7501 Grade Lane keeps the same Thanksgiving closures as the recycling drop-offs. Look up your pickup day with Metro's Address Lookup.
